چکیده

This paper presents the results of two triaxial compression tests performed on approximately 9×10 3 oblate spheroids (lentils) with different initial orientations respect to loading axis (approximately 30° and 60°). Typical stress-strain information is complemented x-ray tomography scans every 1 % strain. Starting from an labelling particles, a new technique used obtain unprecedented detail tracking all particles through time. rich dataset analysed perspective inter-particle contacts (building previous metrological work this subject) revealing that mean contact orientation in both samples rotates towards direction σ at rate depending orientation. Different trends are observed for alignment orientation, significant evolution sample prepared which not as pronounced other sample.

Fabric and Deformation in Granular Materials

The paper presents results of numerical experiments on a large assembly of smooth circular disks. The assembly was subjected to quasi-static biaxial loading at small to moderate strains by using the Discrete Element Method. Unlike the usual particle-based and coordination number approaches, the fabric was locally measured in relation to the shapes and orientations of voids. Deformation was meas...

Fabric Evolution in Granular Materials Subject to Drained, Strain Controlled Cyclic Loading

While there have been many discrete element method (DEM) publications considering the micromechanics of granular materials subject to monotonic loading, studies of the particle-scale material response to cyclic or repeated loading have been comparatively rare. From a geotechnical perspective soil is subjected to repeated loading in a variety of situations. Examples include foundations to railwa...

The Initial and Induced Fabric Anisotropy of Granular Materials

A granular material is most likely to possess an initial anisotropic structure due to the depositional process or the previous stress history. There is also induced fabric anisotropy during shearing. Concerning the significant influence of fabric anisotropy on the stress-strain behaviour of a granular material, in-depth investigation on the two kinds of fabric anisotropy is essential. Initial f...

Contact models for very loose granular materials

One challenge of todays research on particle systems is the realistic simulation of granular materials consisting of many thousands of particles with peculiar contact interactions. In this study, molecular dynamics (MD, also called discrete element method, DEM) is introduced for the simulation of many-particle systems. A wide class of realistic contact models is presented, involving dissipation...

Evolution of shear zones in granular materials.

The evolution of wide shear zones or shear bands was investigated experimentally and numerically for quasistatic dry granular flows in split bottom shear cells. We compare the behavior of materials consisting of beads, irregular grains, such as sand, and elongated particles. Shearing an initially random sample, the zone width was found to significantly decrease in the first stage of the process...
